Christians and Independence Day?

Does it even matter to the majority of “Christians” that they thumb their noses at the words of God that declare that we “can not serve two masters” or that we should “not swear at all” or that “our citizenship is in heaven”?

It does not bother me in the least that Americans celebrate the 4th of July, but what does bother me is that professing Christians, who are supposed to know better celebrate along with the masses. Most of these Christians celebrate the day in ignorance of what the day stands for or that the God that they say they serve rejects them and their false worship. But, the others, who know what they are doing, do it with the complete knowledge of what the New Testament says against it. They have devised elaborate escape routes around any truth that objects to their ability to embrace the things of the world. They even write important-looking documents and books that justify their self-imposed ignorance, then teach these things to others without the least objection from their conscience.

For the Christian, the celebration of the 4th is a repudiation of everything Christ stood for. They may say things like “In God We Trust” but it is not in God that they trust but their own abilities. When they bow to the flag (or stand, it matters not) and place their hand over their heart and pledge allegiance, subscribe, assure, salute, or drink a toast to, they have in effect made a choice of who they serve. Those who align themselves with the world will necessarily use the world’s means to accomplish the world’s ends, and these means are carried over into their personal lives. Love, mercy, forgiveness, propitiation, sacrifice, turning the other cheek, etc., have meaning only in the context of this world’s governance and safety and are twisted to make them compliant.

Christ’s answer to those who were reluctant to follow Him was, “let the dead bury the dead, you come and follow Me.” Matthew 8:22. Let the world play their feel-good games, but you, lay down your sword and come follow Me.

Very few will be able to pass through the “narrow gate” and very few will have the spiritual stamina to actually do what Jesus commanded. Is it any wonder that the end times will be represented by only a few Christians and is it any wonder that this idea of Jesus’ will be the dividing factor in many families.

“I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

“Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Luke 12:49-53

But you, come and follow Me.

“I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world just as I am not of the world.” (John 17:14) “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36)
